The painting is very much like the concrete piece. It looks like wood. It is much too cold for wood fungi / mushrooms here. We will be in the low 30's Fahrenheit and since I'm in an outlying area, we may be in the upper 20's tomorrow morning.

I love fresh mushrooms found in the woods. They are much better than the ones bought in a store that are raised in special environments.

Oh, I think I should explain - it is also too early here to go to pick up mushrooms, so I was looking only for the parasitic fungi growing on the tress bc some of them have interesting look and I like to make photos of them. Some uneatable mushrooms are looking extremely beautifull, especially the myxomycetes, which sometimes resemble coral reefs.

Now I understand. I do not hunt mushrooms because some of the safe mushrooms look much like those which are deadly. From time to time, a hunter who knows what is safe and what is not gives me fresh mushrooms.

I think of I have seen photos of what appears to be morel mushrooms that they find in the forests of Russia, especially as they head north towards the White Sea. The morels around here tend to grow in a patch and are easily overlooked because they are close to the same color as the fallen leaves. They are delicious but require several warm humid nights before they appear. The morels come back every year at the same place.

There are edible tree mushrooms which are mainly found on fallen decaying trees and stumps.

Here you have to boil morels for some time bc they are a little bit poisonous. Do you have the same problem in US? Some mushrooms of the same type are different when they are growing on two different continents. I`ve read that fly agaric in US doesnt have the same properties as its siberian relative and only causes poisoning.

The morels which the hunter's give me are fresh from the forest and we do not need to boil them. I have never had any mushrooms that need to be boiled first before preparing to eat them.

One thing that is commonly done with all mushrooms found in the woods is to soak them in salty water when you bring them home. This drives out very small bugs that might be in the the mushrooms. But you still need to inspect it closely to make sure all pieces of leaves are dislodged.

Here is a userpic of a morel:Photobucket
Please note that as morels get older that they turn from this pretty creamy color to a darker color and finally to brown.

The morels grow in patches in the woods, but not on logs where other types of mushrooms grow.

Unfortunately, I cant see the image. I suppose we are talking about this thing:

"Morchella conica"
All the books about mushrooms say that you need to boil it a lot before you can eat it. But it`s not surprising - even mushrooms growing in Europe can be very different from their russian relatives. I hope to try these mushrooms during this spring.

The morels I posted were the size of a userpic. You should have been able to view that image.

Your photo is the same as the morels found near here. What many of us like to do is crack an egg in a bowl and scramble it up. Add some milk to it. Dip each morel in the egg and milk, then roll it in flour and fry it. We place them on a paper towel to soak up excess oil. The fried morels taste like steak. Many of us eat morels made this way on bread. It's as good as a steak sandwich.

Other people like to melt butter or margarine in a pan and cook the morels in that until done. They are good but I don't think they have as much flavor as battered, floured, and fried.
